Most of the hand sanitizers I the market are alcohol-based, and swallowing it can cause alcohol poisoning, you should keep them away from children. Alcohol also helps in increasing the penetration of other chemicals found in it which can be harmful to health. When you use large amounts of these sanitizers, the alcohol found in it can be absorbed into the blood stream and can cause intoxication or poisoning in children. Other ingredients could include water, fragrance, and glycerin.
- Antibiotic Resistance
Antibiotics are used against bacteria. But sometimes our body builds up some kind of resistance to antibiotics, which can, in turn, promotes resistance to bacteria.
Triclosan is the major anti-bacterial agent found in sanitizers which contributes to making bacteria resistant to antibiotics, which make treating them difficult. Using hand sanitizers can also reduce your resistance to diseases and bacteria by killing the good bacteria which keeps the bad bacteria in check.
- Hormone Disruption
Triclosan which is also a major component in some hand sanitizers can cause some hormonal problems. Chronic use of sanitizers can make the bacteria develop a form of adaptation to the antibacterial properties found in triclosan.
